Common Questions About Residential Radon

Radon questions are common — and important. Here are answers to what homeowners and real estate professionals ask us most.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It can seep into any home through foundation cracks, gaps around pipes, or other openings and accumulate to dangerous levels indoors. The EPA estimates radon causes approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year, making it the second leading cause after smoking.

You can’t see, smell, or taste radon — the only way to know your home’s radon level is to test it. RMS conducts certified radon testing that follows Florida DOH and EPA protocols, giving you accurate results you can act on.

The EPA recommends taking action to reduce radon levels if your home tests at or above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). RMS can assess your results and recommend the right mitigation approach for your home.

Radon testing is increasingly common in real estate transactions, and elevated radon levels can affect a sale. RMS works with realtors and home buyers to conduct timely testing and, if needed, install mitigation systems that meet closing deadlines without disrupting the transaction.

Most residential mitigation systems are installed in a single day. RMS will walk you through the process, explain how the system works, and provide post-installation testing to verify performance before we consider the job complete.
